Vieste – Ancient Charm on the Gargano Coast
Vieste, perched on the easternmost tip of the Gargano Promontory, is a town that immediately captivates with its blend of ancient architecture and spectacular coastal views. I was absolutely enchanted by how old the city feels—like stepping back in time, with narrow, winding streets, whitewashed buildings, and an old town that clings to a rocky spur overlooking the sea.
To truly soak in the authentic flair of Vieste, I recommend staying in one of the charming hotels right in the heart of the village. Dimora del Dragone, Dimora della Vener Luxury Home, or the sleek V Penthouse are all excellent choices, offering stunning views. But be warned, Vieste is filled with steep stairs and cobbled pathways, so pack light—dragging a huge suitcase up those narrow alleys would be a nightmare!
When it comes to dining, Osteria al Duomo was an unforgettable experience. The restaurant serves up refined regional dishes that celebrate Puglia’s rich culinary heritage, paired with excellent local wines. It’s the perfect spot to indulge in some of the freshest seafood and the most exquisite pasta dishes the region has to offer.
One of Vieste’s biggest draws, aside from its charming old town, is its beautiful sandy beaches. The town is flanked by two long stretches of sand, perfect for those who want to relax and soak up the sunshine. If you have more time, though, I recommend exploring the Gargano National Park, an area that will blow you away with its sheer beauty. Vieste is the perfect base for hikes through ancient forests, visits to historic religious sites, and discovering secluded coves along the coastline.
After two days in Vieste, the town’s small size may leave you itching to explore further afield. This brings us to our next stop, just a short drive away.
Peschici – Coastal Bliss and Authentic Flavors
A 30-minute scenic drive along the coastal road will take you to Peschici, another gem of the Gargano Peninsula. This town is all about charm, with its labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys that open up into hidden squares, offering sweeping views over the shimmering Adriatic. Peschici is smaller and even more intimate than Vieste, and one of the best ways to experience it is simply to wander through its winding streets. Don’t rush—let yourself get lost, because you never know when you’ll stumble upon a cute boutique or a café perfect for an espresso or early aperitivo.
If you’re looking for a fantastic place to dine, Da Nonna Italia is my personal recommendation. Tucked away from the main tourist drag, this delightful restaurant offers not only excellent food but also one of the best views in Peschici. I spent a lazy evening there, enjoying the local fare, while the sea breeze and spectacular vistas made it a meal to remember. And for those with a sweet tooth (like me!), you absolutely must stop by Pina del Gelato for some pistachio gelato. It was honestly one of the best I’ve ever tasted—creamy, flavorful, and the perfect way to cool down in the afternoon heat.
But my absolut must-visit location near Peschici is Al Trabucco da Mimi, an extraordinary restaurant just a 10-minute drive from the town. Set right on the water, this place offers an experience unlike any other. We arrived in time for an aperitif, watching the sun sink below the horizon in Peschici while sipping on a delicious glass of Aperol Spritz. It’s hard to describe just how magical this place feels—the sound of the waves crashing below, the golden light on the cliffs, and the fresh seafood served straight from the Adriatic. This was easily one of the highlights of our trip.
Gargano – A Land of Olives and Adventure
Both Vieste and Peschici lie in the Gargano, a region famous for its ancient olive groves, which stretch as far as the eye can see. Trust me, you’ll be stunned as you drive through this breathtaking landscape. You can practically taste the history in the olive oil here—it’s rich, golden, and used in just about every dish. If you have the chance, I highly recommend visiting one of the local olive farms for a tasting session. The passion these producers have for their craft is truly inspiring.
Beyond food, the Gargano Peninsula offers plenty of activities for those looking for a bit of adventure. Whether it’s hiking through the Foresta Umbra, taking a boat trip to explore the many sea caves dotting the coastline, or simply renting a bike to ride along the scenic coastal paths, there’s no shortage of things to do.
Both Vieste and Peschici are perfect places to experience the quieter side of Puglia, far away from the hustle and bustle of more touristy destinations. And the best part about traveling in the off-season? You get to enjoy these towns almost entirely to yourself, savoring the slow pace of life that the locals cherish so much.
