Ah, Polignano a Mare! This picturesque seaside town is a must-visit, but let me tell you, it’s a completely different experience outside the bustling summer months. The town can get unbearably crowded, which can overshadow its charm. I highly recommend visiting during the shoulder seasons to avoid the tourist rush and truly soak in the authenticity of this enchanting place.

What makes Polignano a Mare so special? Nestled atop dramatic cliffs that overlook the Adriatic Sea, its breathtaking views are simply unbeatable. Strolling through its narrow cobblestone streets, you’ll find whitewashed houses with vibrant bougainvillea spilling over the walls, creating a postcard-perfect scene. Make sure to stop by the famous Lama Monachile Beach, with its turquoise waters and unique rock formations—ideal for a dip if you’re lucky enough to catch warm weather.

Where to Swim

If you’re looking for a place to cool off, the town beach (Lama Monachile) is spectacular, but be warned: during the high season, it can get so packed that you might have to stake out a spot to lay your towel. If you prefer a quieter experience, I recommend heading to Il Grottone or Cala Paura, both just a short ten-minute walk away and perfect for a refreshing swim.

If you have a bit more time, take a leisurely stroll to the nearby village of San Vito. It’s a tiny place, but the old architecture is truly remarkable. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time, surrounded by historic buildings that tell stories of the past. Plus, there are lovely spots nearby where you can take a dip in the ocean away from the crowds in Polignano.

Where and What to Eat

Now, let’s talk about food. One culinary highlight that you simply cannot miss is the octopus sandwich. This local specialty is a must-try; it’s fresh, flavorful, and a true testament to the region’s seafood offerings. Trust me; once you have one, you’ll want to indulge in more!

One of the highlights of dining in Polignano a Mare is Grotta Palazzese, an extraordinary restaurant carved into the cliffside. Imagine savoring exquisite dishes while surrounded by stunning rock formations and the sound of waves crashing beneath you. This unique location creates an atmosphere that is nothing short of magical. The restaurant is famous for its fresh seafood and local delicacies, all served with breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea. Dining here is an unforgettable experience that truly encapsulates the essence of Puglia. In my opinion, it is one of the most spectacular dinner locations in Italy.

However, Polignano also boasts a variety of other excellent dining options. Honestly, I felt like a culinary connoisseur every day I spent in Puglia, as the local cuisine never disappointed. Whether it was handmade pasta that perfectly absorbed the rich sauces or the freshest seafood grilled to perfection, the flavors here are nothing short of divine. Don’t forget to try Orecchiette with turnip greens—a traditional dish that embodies the essence of Pugliese cooking.

When it comes to accommodation, Polignano a Mare offers a range of charming hotels:

  • Sei Stelle Mama: A charming spot with modern amenities, perfect for families or couples looking for a comfortable stay.

Monopoli – A Larger Canvas of Pugliese Charm

Next, it’s time to hop over to Monopoli. While we based ourselves in Polignano a Mare, this vibrant town is well worth a visit. Its larger size means that the crowds are more dispersed, allowing you to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere while still experiencing the hustle and bustle of an Italian town.

Walking through the old town of Monopoli feels like exploring a fortress. The narrow alleys, tall buildings, and ancient walls create a unique ambiance that invites exploration. I found Monopoli to be incredibly authentic—think charming shops brimming with local delicacies and quaint cafes that beckon you to take a break and enjoy a coffee.

A Taste of History and Flavor

Monopoli is steeped in history, with roots dating back to ancient times. The remnants of its past are visible in the well-preserved buildings and historical sites scattered throughout the town. As you wander through the cobblestone streets, you can’t help but admire the architecture and imagine the stories that have unfolded within these walls over the centuries.

Be sure to check out the local delicatessens offering exquisite olive oils and other regional specialties. Monopoli is known for its incredible culinary scene, so you’re bound to find a restaurant that will leave you with a lingering taste of Puglia long after your trip.
